Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!

Risen with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King

✴ Bethlehem Peace Light
- presented by the 8 th / 14 th Air Scouts from St Barnabas and St Josephs Churches.
The Bethlehem Peace Light was originally organised by the Austrian Broadcasting Company - and was part of a large charitable relief mission - Light into Darkness, for children in need in Austria and abroad. Since 1986, there has been a great deal of co-operation between Scouts and Guides in many countries which has allowed the light to travel throughout Europe, such that the light is passed on 23 European Countries and for the past few years on to America. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light from the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus was born. The light is then flown to Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries for use at ecumenical services throughout the Continent. Scouts and Guides can then take the light on to other churches, hospitals, old people’s homes, prisons, and places of public, cultural and political importance - to anybody that appreciates the significance of the "gift". In past years the light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail S. Gorbachev, former President of the USSR, King Abdullah bin Al Hussein of Jordan, E U President Romano Prodi and other members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, the UN Troops in Kosovo and to Ground Zero, New York.
✴ Everybody: It came upon the Midnight Clear
It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven's all-gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o'er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o'er its Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.
Yet with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the Angel-strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
And man at war with man hears not
The love-song which they bring;
Oh hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the Angels sing.
For lo! the days are hastening on,
by prophet seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold
when peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendours fling,
and the whole world send back the song
which now the angels sing.
✴ Reading: Luke 2 verses 1-20 - Brian Angus Chairman of CTiE
Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.
This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
All went to enrol themselves, everyone to his own city.
Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enrol himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being great with child.
It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth.
She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.
There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.
Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
The angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.
For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.
This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough." Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest, On earth peace, good will toward men."
It happened, when the angels went away from them into the sky, that the shepherds said one to another, "Let's go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the feeding trough.
When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child. All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.
But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken to them.
✴ Music: Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide Band
The Kingston & Malden Scout & Guide Band is an enthusiastic marching band consisting of young people between the ages of 9 to 21, with adult leaders and instructors, who are all members of the Scout & Guide Association in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
All members take part in band activities in addition to their normal Scout & Guide training programmes.
The Band was formed in 1950 by Cliff Williams who was a local cubmaster. Cliff brought together 6 scouts, 3 playing bugles and 3 on side drums. The Kingston District Scout Band was seen at its first public event in April 1951 at Kingston's St Georges Day Parade.
Geoff Mynott joined the Band as a scout at its formation and went on to become its Bandmaster for over 30 years. He retired from this post in December 1995 and became Honorary Life President. Sadly Geoff was unable to attend the bands 50th Birthday Concert, held in Kingston's prestigious council chambers, and passed away in June 2000.
The Bands current Bandmaster is Alison Eggitt and Karl Nicholas is the assistant Bandmaster. Along with their team of instructors both have been able to continue developing the Band from where Geoff left off.
Scouting’s Centenary year this year is turning out to be a really busy and memorable one for us. We’ve brought Suffolk Scouts’ Centenary Parade to life in Bury St. Edmunds and had an exhausting day performing as part of the closing ceremony for the World Jamboree. Since the summer, we have performed at “Bands United” - a concert featuring Kingston’s three Scout and Guide bands - been part of a County massed band at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show and performed at “Live ‘07” - another national Centenary event.

✴ Drama Group: The Sheepdog
The Epsom Methodist Drama Group, now in its 62nd year, holds drama workshops, organises theatre trips and puts on a wide variety of performances, both light-hearted and serious. A recent production, OUTSIDER, presented the Bible story of Ruth, overlaid with 21st century issues of terrorism and refugees. The photo shows Boaz caring for Ruth in a scene from the play. We are a friendly group, always looking for people to join us whether as actors or behind the scenes. You don't have to be a Methodist or even a church-goer.

✴ Everybody: While Shepherds Watched
While shepherds watched
Their flocks by night
All seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down
And glory shone around
"Fear not," said he,
For mighty dread
Had seized their troubled minds
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind."
"To you in David's Town this day
Is born of David's line
The Saviour who is Christ the Lord
And this shall be the sign."
"The heavenly Babe You there shall find
To human view displayed
And meanly wrapped In swathing bands
And in a manger laid."
Thus spake the seraph, And forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song
"All glory be to God on high
And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth
From heaven to men
Begin and never cease."
✴ Whitehall Singers
The Whitehall Singers began in 1978 as a group of Friends of Whitehall who, dressed in Tudor costume gathered to sing Christmas carols outside Whitehall, the Tudor house in Cheam Village, Surrey. Since then they have sung in many different guises at both Whitehall and Nonsuch Mansion, at many events ranging from an Alternative Shakespeare Day, annual Christmas words and music evenings (now in their 15th year), Stir-Up Sunday, Burns Night and most recently the FON Gang Show. Songs sung cover many centuries, from mediaeval to modern (well at least the 1960's) and the singers dress accordingly.

✴ Vote of thanks by Michael Arthur (A COTE Trustee)
Michael thanked all for their attendance in the congregation from many different Churches across Epsom and beyond. A special thanks to the Scout and Guide band who tonight were under the baton of Karl Nicholas the assistant Bandmaster, in both the magnificent playing and their immaculate uniform code, well done all.
The Whitehall Singers and the Epsom Methodist Church drama group are to be congratulated, they even brought their sheepdog! Not forgetting the two Air Scout who came with the Bethlehem Light and spoke with excellent clarity.
We are grateful to Rev Michael Preston for allowing us to use this beautiful church. St Barnabas Church is a group of Christians of all ages and varied backgrounds called together by God. To the glory of God, our church building has been a holy place of prayer and service in this part of Epsom for nearly 100 years. We praise God for renewing our tradition of worship as a sign of hope in this time of crisis and challenge for the Church in England. The recent major changes to the building is a gift from God expressing the new freedom and openness we receive through worship.
We wish to thank to Sainsbury's and Waitrose for providing mince pies, wine and fruit juice.
Thank you for the support to the COTE funds which helps to maintain the Dovecote bookshop and other Christian outreaches in Epsom. As you leave may we wish you all a Beautiful Christmas and a Glorious New Year.
£550 was raised for Christian Outreach in Epsom.

✴ Everybody: O Come all ye Faithful
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
Lo, He shuns not the Virgin’s womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle,
Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
Lo star led chieftains, Magi, Christ adoring,
Offer Him incense, gold, and myrrh;
We to the Christ Child bring our hearts’ oblations.
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,
We would embrace Thee, with love and awe;
Who would not love Thee, loving us so dearly?
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be glory given;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Past Reports if available
The annual Dovecote Christmas Carol Concert - was held on Thursday 15th December 2005 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Margaret's Drive, Epsom with thanks to the administration for allowing this concert to take place in their beautiful Church.
The Epsom and Ewell Silver Band (at very short noticed!) played and the Leatherhead Pilgrim Singers under their Musical Director Rev. Ian Howarth sang to the enjoyment of the assembled host, whilst The Rt. Rev. Christopher Hill (left) The Bishop of Guildford compeered the evening in a professional manner with interesting facts or were they fiction? about the origins and composers of the carols
We
were equally delighted that The Mayor Jean Smith and Consort (husband
Dennis left), plus our member of parliament for Epsom & Ewell Chris
Grayling, with the C E O of the Council David Smith, and Nancy and Roy
Richmond were able to attend.
The Mayor, MP Chris Grayling, Christopher Hill, David Smith
The Pilgrim Singers are members of the Churches in Leatherhead, Epsom, Cobham and Effingham and any others who wish to join them. They gave a wide variety of carols and other suitable festive songs four sections of two couplets and for each Ian their director gave more interesting facts which made each song much more interesting for our enjoyment.

The Silver Band who stepped in at the last minute played for all the congregational hymns and carols, whilst they could only muster 50% of their normal strength due to other engagements, they performed at a very high standard and kept the singing to a welcome fast pace, whilst conductorless they kept perfect timing and deserved the extended applause. Their Christmas medley was most appropriated and enjoyable.
Nancy Richmond gave the first reading from St Luke Chapter 1 reading verses 26 to 28.
1:26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
1:27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name [was] Mary.
1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, [thou that art] highly favoured, the Lord [is] with thee: blessed [art] thou among women.
The second reading was Luke Chapter 2 verses 8 to 20 and was read by David Smith the Chief Executive Officer for the Borough Council of Epsom and Ewell.
2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
2:9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
2:12 And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
2:17 And when they had seen [it], they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
2:18 And all they that heard [it] wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
2:19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered [them] in her heart.
2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
King James (Authorized) Version
Midway in the service Christopher Hill gave his Christmas message based on the Russian story of Babushka The gist of the story is: The three wise men following the star to find the Christ Child stop at Babushka's cottage asking for food and shelter. She willingly takes them in, they invite her to go with them to find the Babe, but she says she has to clean the cottage, find her best clothes, she has no suitable gift and many more reasons, a bit like us.
They leave without her and she promises she will follow as soon as she has things ready for the trip. She then starts using her craft skills to make a suitable gift, a small wooden toy, she continues until she has a sack full. By the time she is ready the star has moved across the sky and disappeared and although she sets out on the trip she gets lost and never finds the Christ child, but each time she finds a suitable child she leaves a toy by the time she arrived in Bethlehem all her toys had gone but so had the Christ child who had fled with his earthly parents to Egypt to escape the wroth of King Herod. This is why today she leaves gifts in children's stockings. The Bishop used this story to illustrate that all Christians have the chance to emulated Babushka's spirit not only over the Advent season but on each step of our Christian pilgrimage.
Everyone enjoyed the evening at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the opportunity to sing favourite carols before sharing together with refreshments.
Over £800 was raised for Christian Outreach in Epsom.
